Picture a 2x2 square of crops. Place one sprinkler on each side of that square so that each crop is watered by one sprinkler. Now pick one of the other squares the sprinkler waters: this is a part of another 2x2 square of crops with an identical arrangement of sprinklers around it, one or two of which are already placed. This pattern can be repeated endlessly and has no gaps.
I only made 3 normal ones, but it's not hard to realize that they aren't worth it at all. I use them more as "decoration" now.
New player can make enough for 1 sprinkler in a couple days of fishing, which may be the best use of this fish gold as later in the game it becomes worthless. To access the sewer you must find it after completing the first achievement items in the museum collection, the sprinkler is only for sale Fridays.
