Planted starfruit seed dried out next to quality sprinkler?

I was going around my daily checkup routine on my farm and noticed one of my starfruit seeds dried out while being next to a quality sprinkler.
Im a fairly new player so is there something i'm missing or might this just be a bug?

couple possibilities.

1) Was there a thunderstorm the day before? Lightning may randomly strike crops, killing them
2) I believe there's a small chance that random crops will just wither for no reason.
