If you don't mind playing with mods, there's one that adds a quest from Marnie on the Special Orders board that unlocks the auto-petter after you complete it. That's what I use now. https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7534
Oh bummer. I guess it goes into my Living Hat category which continues to elude me despite 100s of hours of play too :)
Following up on this now that I'm the proud owner of two auto-petters. It was a bit tedious but in no way close to the Living Hat difficulty.
I still don't understand what the good slime levels are in dangerous mode so I took the skull cavern approach. I have a bunch of crystalariums so a steady supply of Jade, traded for Stairwells, was no problem. It took maybe 4-6 trips to Skull Cavern on high luck days, with nearly full luck buffs (the wallet buff, lucky lunch, gingerale, and one lucky ring - - presumably cooking those food buffs with Qi spice would have helped but I didn't try). Each run of 120 stairs revealed six or more treasure rooms.
According to the wiki, the auto-petter has a 1/26 drop rate from a treasure room. This felt right although I question those values because I have waaaay more red cowboy hats, seed makers, and energy potions which also have a 1/26 drop rate. RNG will RNG but some of the wiki listed 1/26 items definitely dropped far more often than the 2x auto-petters I finally got.
