It's not intuitive at all and could almost be categorized as a bug IMO... the only thing I've found in Stardew Valley I might categorize as such.
Seeing this makes me not trust those community board quests - meaning the one they build by the beach.
Anyway it's not that big of a deal ig since I have zero stars with Clint and I'm not running into the mines especially for him. Because ♥♥♥♥ Clint. I'd do it anyone else, even Shane as at least Shane is a decent guy in the end. Penny? I'd get Penny 10000 pieces of copper. But Clint? ♥♥♥♥ Clint.
2. you dont have to GIVE the ores to Clint, just talk to him AFTER collecting new ores, he lets you keep the ores. (don't even need it in your hand, just in your inventory)
3. If its later in the day and he has left his shop, you can talk to him in the saloon after you collect the ores.
4. You get PAID for finishing this quest, and keep the ore -- which you need anyway for Clint to upgrade your tools.
5. he will ask you to do this quest several time over the years. You are going to spend time mining anyway, why not get paid extra for it.
But yes the community boards also want you to actually gather/mine/grow whatever and not just give them items from a hoard of stuff you already have. It's clear though as when you take the quest your tracker has a progress bar for both acquiring and giving the items separately. The prizes are much bigger though and there's really no challenge or fun in just paying off quests instantly from your hoard of stuff.
Although many of them practically require it, unless you are lucky enough to have the exact crop they want mature on the exact day they ask for it.
