Does broken fences matter ?
Is there a point in repairing them ? Or it's just for the looks ?

Are the chickens going to get loose and be eaten by wild animals?

Well they spend Spring Summer and Fall with the door open and nothing ever happened. Safe to assume wild animals don't know how to use the barn door.

My question is still standing: When they are broken they still block my path ( I will assume they still function as fences for animals too), so will they stay broken for ever ? Or will they despawn ? The wiki doesn't say a word about this...
Thing is, I use wood fences, they have been there for 3 weeks and some of them are already broken...
The purpose with fence is to block off certain areas of your farm, and by that also keep animals
from running all over the place. They also block off wild grass. Fence decay with time, especially the simple wood fence. The gold clock which costs 10 million prevents this and also prevents debris from appearing on your farm. It is a late game object if you don't cheat, that is. Otherwise I can recommend the hardwood fence. It lasts for a very long time (I think a couple of years). The animals can be attacked if they are left outside without being able to get inside their coop/barn.

Another thing, on my very first farm I didn't have a limited area for my hens at first and what I noticed was that one of them wandered off really far and did not return to the coop like they usually do at a certain time. It ended up sleeping outside. So I guess there is that as well.

It does:

Fences will disappear entirely if left in a damaged state for too long.

I normaly use lightning rods instead of fences, leaving only 2 fences for each fence gate. the rods collect lightning in storms for extra money if I'm not using batteries, protect my crops and trees from thunder, don't decay, and can be moved arround freely if I want to expand/shrink the "fenced" area. you have to do some mining, smelting (or recycling for refined quartz) and bat hunting, but you only have to worry about 2~8 fences, depending on how many gates you have. and you can often fix those few fences on the fly.

Tea Trees! I use it only for my farm animals and around my farm map. By first fall I get around 5 to 6k without pickling or making it into tea.

benefit of lightning rods is if you put them in the middle of grass the animals cant eat it and you never run out

Yeah, you can do the same with fences.

Can you explain this a bit more ? Is it a year round crop ?

this only happens if they can't path back to their pen, and even then i think it is a chance to happen or not
It doesn't always happen even if the animals end up sleeping outside. You know it has happened when you notice one animal missing and when you interact with the other animals the message box will say that they are feeling paranoid and stressed because something "bad" happened during the night.
