Big Buttons in Volcano Caves

I keep seeing these ruined buildings in the volcano caves and inside some of them is a gray square with what seems to be a button in the middle. Does anyone know how these are activated if they can be?

It's a mechanic to unlock the next floor. Some floor doors have bars in front of them and this mechanic unlocks them.

you either mean the actual button which you can simply step onto, and once all of them are activated, the door to the next floor will open.

or you have seen those purely cosmetic "bigger buttons" which are just decoration like those giant cogs or screws lying around. in that case, they don't do anything.

I think those "buttons" are meant to be tables. For dwarfs o.o But I find the place a bit confusing myself. The way things look something horrible must have happened there!
