Robin's request of gathering hardwoods (bug maybe or not?)

me trying to understand

yes!?? i was so confused too! below is the UI i have after i dropped the 80 pcs of hardwood needed for her project. but then i realised what or how it was meant to be completed is to actually go chop down the woods after accepting the challenge/requests, so i came to that conclusion on the 3rd days(i think it gives you 7 days in total i think), as also show below the meter actually increasing, but now i wont have enough days to gather 80 pcs by 4 remaining days. so i was gathering the woods behind the wizard tower, in total i can get 12 pcs per day, but enough now, that i have already save the game on the 4th day, i am basically screwwed. so i think the player has to starting collecting woods immediately but was it indicated anywhere!??? i did not see that?! so if you collect the woods everyday you will be able to complete the meter. i dont know yet if there is any work around!? NOT COOL design!

I'm assuming you've already cleared out all the stumps and logs on your farm. Aside from those and the secret woods, the only reliable way to get more hardwood (aside from the new tree I think they added) is the level 10 foraging trait that gives you a chance at getting hardwood from regular trees.

Hardwood can also be found by chopping the new mahogany trees (although you have to grow them first.) You can also get hardwood by chopping regular trees if you have lvl 10 foraging and have chosen the forester/lumberjack profession. If you have lvl 10 but didn't choose that profession, you can change it at the statue of uncertainty in the sewers.
edit: Nulien beat me to the post by a few seconds XD

yeah changing profession to lumberjack is probably my best chance of potentially gathering enough hardwood in time, but how many pcs are we talking about ? per chopping down one tree and are the numbers consistent of its random?
It's random. I don't know what % chance the game's RNG uses, but I find I get hardwood about half the trees I cut down (maybe a little less then half) and I get 1 or 2 pieces each time. So it's not great, but clearing out the Cindersap Forest with it could still get you a good amount.

Oh, and the level 5 foraging trait that leads to that level 10 trait also gives you a random chance to get 3 hardwood off of each stump in the Secret Woods instead of just 2 each time.

I *think* it's possible to do, even without the the foraging perks. You've got 5 days to do it, so 5 visits to the secret woods will net you 60. If you have access to the new island (and you haven't done it already), I seem to recall (and I could be wrong about this) there were at least two mahogany trees that you could get to without having to unlock any new areas, and that should get you your last 20. If you end up a few pieces short, you could also try breaking crates and barrels in the mines

A lot of the new quests requires actual gathering/harvesting of materials so there is no work around it. Also the quest time limit goes down each day from the first day it was posted, you have to get the quest exactly day it was posted to get the full time limit.

I thought I was crazy when I accepted it and only had 5 days to do it

that sounds against the game's philosofy, though... Can we at least try again later if we fail?

Yes you do get the chance to do the quest again. I failed it too, lol!
