Beyond just the above-ground sprinkler having something to sit on, logically in the real world there wouldn't be a sprinkler system placed underground beneath sand, so maybe he was trying to keep them somewhat true to life.

well, to get back on topic, i really hope that it's just something we haven't figured out or that there's some uber advanced sprinkler system we're too new to this version to have found yet. cuz, otherwise, Stardew Valley just made history for me by upping the amount of swearing i do during play. other games, swearing's the norm. but it Wasn't for SdV... Before anyway. ah well. such is virtual life, i guess.

Another option hinted by the map is the excessive use of the watering fertilizer. (i yet have to try that out because that fertilizer was useless before (maybe thats why they were reworked according to patch notes))
