For first time experience I would recommend using seasonal outfits though! It's just really, really well made and the game's a bit more realistic that way, outwear for cold weather etc. Otherwise they're like cartoon character wearing the same clothes everyday even to the beach. (vanilla outfits also included in mod)
I also kinda liked not knowing where they are 100% of the time. Idk if I would describe such a thing as core to the game's "fun and mystery", though it was kinda nice. But I got lazy and caved to the map locations, so I don't find it indispensable either. I second your seasonal outfits recommendation too.
However, I probably wouldn't bother with mods on my first time around. Possibly more out of inertia than anything else, I am kinda bad at doing mods, but I also don't think they're needed. Map locations sure aren't needed, you can get by just fine. There might be something to "getting your bearings without putting in a single mod".
