How do you put on clothing?

I just crafted a yellow dress and tried to put it on my character but when I tried it didn't work. I tried switching it in the side panel of the sewing machine, the inventory area where you would switch rings and such, and I even tried using it like a food item yet nothing has worked. Does anyone know how to help? Thanks!

I don't have the UI right in front of me, but there's a specific slot, I think to the left, where you put your boots or rings, next to an image of your character

Maybe you need to remove whatever you're wearing first? Like for me, on my inventory screen I think, I have an equipment slot for my overalls. I take those off, then put on the new item.
