Dust Sprites in the mine can be a good source.

Dust Sprites are the best free way. But just get money and buy it from Clint.

I had this issue as well, so I started using charcoal kilns and doing mass replant's and deforesting. Problem solved. But, I do agree that dust sprites are the better solution as far as time spent and profit while hunting them from gems/ore.

Correct me if I'm misremembering, but I think if you kill enough dust sprites in the mines, you can get an accessory from the adventurer's guild that increases the amount of coal they drop.

As mentioned, Dust Sprites are your best free way of getting coal. However, I find it a lot easier just to buy a stack or 2 from Clint. Doesn't really cost a lot, and 1 stack of coal lasts a LONG time, since it would take 5 stacks of an ore to get through 1 stack of coal.

Kill the balls that jump in the mine, they give a nice amount of coal, repeat several times!:steamhappy:

1. Charcoal kilns. You get about 50% more wood at level 10 Foraging with the right perks, so you'll be able to turn 10 trees into like 30 coal.

2. The level 10 Mining perk that gives extra coal.

3. Kill dust sprites for coal until you unlock the Burglar's Ring. Resume killing dust sprites. You'll now get twice as much coal.

Like others have said, killing dust sprites is the best way to farm coal. I usually jump between floors 55, 60, and 65 with the elevator in the mines since there's usually a large amount of dust sprites on those floors. I also use charcoal kilns to convert wood into coal.

Charcoal kilns- thay use ten wood for 1 peace of coal but it is worth it i use it when i dont feel like going into the mines

Nobody has mentioned this one: once you have the reward from killing the dust sprites, go to the desert caves and keep exiting, killing the purple slimes that appear on level 1. They drop coal. Don't worry about working your way down. If you get a staircase or a hole, use them, but reset fast and if there are no slimes just leave. I get way more coal doing this.

Also, after you do a favor for the wizard on the new community quest board, he gives a recipe to summon more monsters which makes this great for farming. I usually come out with 10+ Iridium and 50+ coal for a cheap day when you are still in year one or struggling for money. Be sure and break the barrels and crates because they drop coal, too.

Also, red slimes drop coal but in my experience the dust sprites are better.

I *highly* recommend taking the extra ore/extra coal Mining Skill perks. You can reset them later to match up with your late-game strategy.
