2. The level 10 Mining perk that gives extra coal.
3. Kill dust sprites for coal until you unlock the Burglar's Ring. Resume killing dust sprites. You'll now get twice as much coal.
Also, after you do a favor for the wizard on the new community quest board, he gives a recipe to summon more monsters which makes this great for farming. I usually come out with 10+ Iridium and 50+ coal for a cheap day when you are still in year one or struggling for money. Be sure and break the barrels and crates because they drop coal, too.
Also, red slimes drop coal but in my experience the dust sprites are better.
I *highly* recommend taking the extra ore/extra coal Mining Skill perks. You can reset them later to match up with your late-game strategy.
