Is this game "old people" friendly?
My mom is retired, and since lockdown she been going hardcore on facebook games like farmville and stuff cuz she cant rly get out, so i was considering buying this game for her, i see people get lost in it and i think she would enjoy it.

But im kinda worried that it may be too complicated for her, the games she plays kinda hold her hand at the start and help out teaching how to do stuff, so im wondering if this game has some sort of initial tutorial just to get her going.

There's no real tutorial but you don't need a Ph.D either to understand how things work. The wiki is really well made and explains a lot of things and the community is generally kind and helpful.

There isn't really much of a tutorial, besides a few starting quests which briefly tell you about things like planting and watering crops, how to craft by having you make a scarecrow, stuff like that.

But really, the basics of farming in this game are pretty self-explanatory... you start off with an axe, hoe, watering can, pickaxe and scythe, and most folks don't need a tutorial to figure out what to do with any of those.

It also benefits from being a game that doesn't require you to progress in any specific way, and you can do stuff at whatever pace you want.

I'm old, and have no trouble with this game. Funny question.

No tutorial, but there's also no real time limit. The only things beginners NEED to know is to not over-exert yourself, because if your energy drops too far below zero, you'll pass out... and that you automatically pass out at 2am, so she should go to bed before then.

I guess that depends on the "old people" from my experience. As a IT Tech I often meet people that are just "born in the wrong decade" when it comes to computers. You are not going to face rocket science calculations, blood and gore and heavy violence in the game. It is made to be a nice family friendly game about farming and community.

If your mom can handle Farmville, she'll handle Stardew Valley.

The only thing that might give her a problem is Skull Cavern diving (late game stuff), and the arcade games in the saloon, the rest should be a nice, relaxing time-sink.

Finding it frustrating. Get recipes but no way to cook. Get crafting tips, but no idea how to craft. Geode says take to blacksmith, but no smith found.

You should have found him through the quest that asks you to meet everyone in town (it's Clint). You have a crafting menu in the interface where you also have your inventory, it's one of the many tabs.
As for cooking you need a kitchen and you need to upgrade your house at least once if I'm not mistaken to have one.

I'm 54 and my son bought the game for me. I'm totally hooked.

I have to admit, it's not immediately apparent that you have to upgrade your house to cook food. You do get a letter early on saying it comes with a kitchen, but that's easy to overlook.

For the blacksmith though, all you really have to do is look around town for the building that has a furnace running beside it with smoke coming out. Or you can look at the map and mouse over various locations until you find the one that says Blacksmith.

Old geezer here, your mom should love it. While there's no tutorial there really doesn't need to be. And give her a link to the wiki and later to Nexus Mods so she can explore there as well. I found that while my first play through was without mods, later play throughs have been made a new game by adding things like Stardew Valley expanded and some of the recolor mods.
