Ginger Island is your vacation home, you can travel back and forth daily. Its not meant for you to move there and forget your farm.
Once you fix up the beach huts the villager NPC's will also travel to the island to vacation for the day, but travel back at night.
Once you get to 7 hearts with Leo, he will move to the main land too.
There are several quests on the island, and Mr Qi has a secret room there, where you can get new items, and check your status toward 100% completion.

Think of the ginger island farm as a second, more distant greenhouse. No crows, no seasons, grow pretty much anything there. (Although there are weeds, so a little care is needed) but you can pretty much just set it up, leave it growing and drop in every few days when you can spare the time to run down to Willy's shop.

Once you get an island obelisk set up on the farm, and a farm obelisk on the island, travel between the two becomes pretty much trivial... Until then? well, don't stress about optimising ginger island too much... Anything you plant there will wait for you.

I started a hops farm on the island once I got the obelisks, I don't recommend it unless you got the tractor mod or those harvest with scythe mods since you can't build jumino huts there and it would take forever manually harvesting them all every day.

ginger island is a great place to grow out-of-season crops too. If you need a stack of melons to feed your pigs (they give you more truffles -- Husbandry mod), grow them on the island any time of year.
Or you can set up only crops the have continued produce and get them all year. ex: corn, eggplant, strawberries, etc.
I planted fruit trees on the island, you get all fruits every day. If you have the Automate mod, just put a chest next to every tree and crops are harvested for you. then place a keg and preserve jar beside each tree and you will get wine and jelly continuously too. I have the same set up in my green house.

yes, the tractor makes things easier, i mostly uses it in the mines and forest to chop trees. My juminos take care of my crops. If fact i mostly use the horse when running around town so i dont accidently harvest when i dont want to--- done that LOTS of times. And you still need to upgrade your tools for other things. The tractor also makes foraging faster and easier.
The tractor also makes it WAY EASIER to get through the volcano without dying.

when you get the ginger island teleport monolith on your farm and the counterpart on the island farm, traveling to mainfarm and back is a matter of seconds.
