Marnie - dislikeable?
Is Marnie supposed to be the most dislikeable character on stardrew valley, or was it an oversight on the developers part?

First she literally dumps an animal (I chose a cat) on us the first week of farming under the notion that we got space. Game wise it doesn't mean much but in itself as an idea it is completely irresponsible and puts too much faith on a person you just met, as well as increasing the responsibilities of the new arrivee.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mr Whiskers (the dark paw-n of Catland) but its still wrong.

Secondly, she knows Shane is troubled and does nothing (even go so far as belittling and ridiculing him when he is trying to be better saying things like "you seem happy, discount on alcohol today" - to a problematic drink addict? Yeh a total stupid hoe.

Thirdly, she a hoe. She a Lewis hoe but a hoe no less. I don't mind ofc, but sth tells me she is the one who wants them to be silent about their relationship. Not a major problem, but still doesn't add to hee character.

My "friendship" with her started like a parasite, as soon as I got 1 star she started asking for things on the pretends that were "such good friends" (I do not know if it was meant to be condescending but it sure sounded like it).

All in all, she is my least liked character in the entire stardrew valley universe, including all supporting characters (tourists, travel merchants, etc) and cave monsters.

Prove me wrong?

Sounds like you've just chosen to dislike her, and are looking for ways to justify that dislike (which is, by the way, not an uncommon human tendency.) However, just because you decided to see everything about her in a negative light doesn't mean that she was written that way.

1) The pet. Marnie doesn't "dump" an animal on you; she says, more or less, "I found a stray, but I'm so busy with my own family and caring for my own animals I couldn't give it the attention it deserves. By giving you cat/dog, you and the animal will both have companionship and a happy home."

2) Marnie seems to be frustrated with Shane's alcoholism, but it's obvious that she's still concerned about him and fears for his well-being because a)she asks the player for help and b) she still allows Shane to live in her house.

3) I'm not sure what on this Earth (err, wherever Stardew Valley is) makes you think "anyone who wants a loyal relationship with a single partner is a ho, but you're completely wrong about who wants secrecy. Lewis is the one who wants to keep their romance a secret because, as mayor of the town, he's worried people would think he's showing unethical favoritism to Marnie.
Thanks, I thought as much.
But I have something to add to your comments

1) yes, according to her. But again, she barely knows the protagonist and just assumes what she is doing is right. I understand what you mean but it doesnt make what shes doing right.

2) Firstly doesn't Shane pay her for living. Ok, I admit she isn't the worst (in fact its very nice of her to let shane stay). Of course she is concerned but she does nothing and again relying on us. If it was a small chore id get it but this is the life of her nephew and she is basically like "i cannot be asked, he is a screwup. I'll just let the new guy handle him". Also, Shanes biggest problem is depression due to being a failure and noone taking him seriously or listening to him. Please explain how Marnie aids with this, in any of the dialogue between the tree (Marnie, Shane, protagonist).

3) No, I meant sleeping around (it was joke, calm down, i take it back if needed). The emphasis here was on the secrecy of their relationship. You might be absolutely right, and it might just be my negative image of her that I saw a person who is so ashamed of her nephew that she had, what could be, an affair (slight possibility) with a town mayor out of desperation but does not want the town to know. This however is a very weak point and you are most probably right.

Again even with all these good things, I still consider her the worst Stardrew character.
Emphasis on worst, and not bad.

It is not up to us to prove you wrong. It is your assertion, so it is up to you to prove you are right.

Which you have hardly done.
Nah the real worst character is the MC and you as the player for letting themself get treated that way even if it might just be your opinion on her character and for still attempting to continue befriending someone you dislike in return for personal gain in form of a ghost giving you progress achievements. (lol jk)

But in all seriousness why did the character not decline responsibility of a stray a stranger offered you (sure you as a player can't reject it but your character sure didn't) that's not normal behavior, most people that can care for it will and those who can't won't. Really wish you could decline important things like this.

On topic though, my friends constantly spoke badly about shane because they disliked his attitude when encountered randomly (not sure what it was he said to them) but it just goes to show how far a misunderstanding or one bad interaction can go, even if it's just that one time they always speak badly about shane when they see him lol.

Agreed. Also her store IS NEVER OPEN. YOU WILL WALK IN AT OPENING TIME. SHE IS STANDING AT. THE. COUNTER. BUT SHES MOVES AS SOON AS YOU ENTER SO YOU CAN'T BUY ANYTHING. F MARNIE
1. IIRC, you can decline the cat/dog. Marnie's just looking for someone to take in a poor thing (maybe you aren't even a first choice - who knows!) and it's not like you are obligated to accept. If you did - it's your problem.

2. Lucky you that you don't have a first-hand experience with living with someone with addiction, especially if it's a small rural town (more like a village even). Maybe Marnie just don't know what to do with Shane anymore short of wrapping him up and shipping to some recovery clinic (btw, it costs money and I'm not sure she's doing all to well for that), and besides that wouldn't work if he doesn't want help in the first place. He admits to having a problem LATER to an OUTSIDER. As it stands, we see only a glimps of Marnie/Shane interactions and who knows how it was before you as a player show up... If you see it your way - well, that's how you see it. I saw it totally differently.
Oh, and btw - what looks like belittle to an outsider might be just a (sort of) friendly inside family joke, definitely without any malicious intent behind it. You know - eye of a beholder...

3. Marnie wants love, and wants their relationship to be brought to light - it's Lewis who wants to keep it secret. I might have a different opinion on her putting up with that, but that still doesn't make her a ho. And btw, she is loyal to her love, so your remark about sleeping around doesn't stand. I'd say Caroline should be called out for "sleeping around" first (remember - dubious Abigail's parentage).

I named my character Lewis, this is the second time I've named my character after an existing character and got the two confused.

I gotta do reasearch more.

Hahaha, this thread must have been so confusing for a minute!

Mayor Lewis is the worst character in the game by far. He is forcing Marnie to keep their relationship a secret out of fear that it will hurt his reputation. The only thing that he does with the title of "Mayor" is to kiss up to the governor and yell at people. He never attempted to fix up the Community Center or the rest of the town probably due to him siphoning all the town's money into building a life sized gold statue of himself. Also he is a creeper. He shows up on your farm at some crazy hour of the night between 2am and 6am, probably after he is thru with Marnie for the night, to collect the items you want to sell that day. However, if he happens to find one of your tools laying around that day he will let himself into your house and leave the tool by your bed for you to find in the morning. No telling what else he is doing in your house while you are asleep. And don't even get my started on the Truffle Oil he needs.

I married her nephew, but she still refuses to recognise it and claims he lives at her place. A stubborn homophobe!

No, they seem to be ok with it, unlike the real life. Also, I have no idea, which religion they have there, seems like something pagan.

Ah, indeed, they worship Yoba, and there's even a shrine in the general store (!), but details are scarce.
