rice and irrigation
So I got some rice from a fishing chest. How do you know if you've got them irrigated? The wiki just drops irrigation like I'm supposed to know how it works.

Do you not have to water them if they're irrigated?

If you plant them near a water source e.g. the ponds in your farm, until 3 tiles from it iirc (someone correct me if I'm wrong), then they'll be irrigated. You'll be able to see that they're watered. You can also use sprinklers if you want.

I planted some near the watering hole and some further away, and I can see the difference. It looked like 3 spaces was the cutoff.

So if you plant normal crops within 3 squares of the water, you don't have to water them? Why doesn't everyone start their first plot by the water?

That's only for rice.

Yeah, you can see here how far the irrigation goes for rice. It's 3 tiles diagonally too.
