Task 0 : Build a Chest?
When new players start a first game of SV they might experience the following :

The game starts with a quest to plant, water and harvest 15 parsnips. The 12 inventory places are already half filled with axe, hoe, watering can, pickaxe, scythe and the seeds.
After clearing some ground and within minutes the rest of the inventory is probably filled with wood, sap, stone, coal, fiber, wild seeds, etc. At that point the players may experience a deadlock. With full inventory they can no longer pick up any new type items they find. They may go to the town and explore the world but will probably have to ignore most of the foraging items they find on the way. Pierre will only buy some types of items. Later they may dump all the surplus stuff into the sell box near the house to clear the inventory. (Not the best use for wood, stone, etc.)
The 24-slot-bag at Pierre's shop costs 2.000 Gold, so it seems a long way to go ...
It may take some time for new players to find the construction menu and realize that they can build chests and use them to expand the small inventory.

(Actually the game even allows to build a chest while the inventory is full. The player can pick up wood or place the constructed chest in the full inventory by dragging other items from inventory to the ground. (No need to put items into the trash bin or sell box to temporarely make room.) The items can be picked up again later.)

Since chests are so important in the game from the very first minute, I think the game should either start with a quest to build a chest or provide a starting chest to ensure that new players have a good start in SV and do not run into an early full inventory deadlock. Chests are more important for the early game than planting 15 parsnips since chests are usefull and necessary for all skills (mining, fishing, foraging, farming).

Gosh, you figured it out and i figured it out, and I would bet that just about everyone here figured it out, so why do we need a special tutorial step for such an obvious thing?

There are a lot of games where you can only upgrade your inventory by buying larger bags and cannot build chests. So it depends on the type of games the player usually plays if a chest is an obvious option or not.
Giving new players a hint makes the game more user-friendly.

I'm not opposed to it, but it seems unnecessary... But mostly I just commented because I found it humorous that you used s/he several times instead of just opting for the gender neutral "they". :P

Have a heart. Some of us are older than others and they is not a natural pronoun for us when refering to an individual. We will try though.:steamhappy:

Singular 'they' is older than the singular 'you', nice try though

Thanks for your hint. I updated the OP.

It's the effort that counts!

Please consider that for a many forum members english is not their native language.

Or they just outright forget it, like me.

Yes, it is older but fell out of use. For me talking about a singlular person as a "they" is very cold and impersonal.

There's also no need to take that tone. It's a person's feelings that count - not the political phraseology they use. I mean well and love everybody that isn't a ♥♥♥♥. You don't want to alienate people like me :-)

Common sense would dictate that you build a chest. I wouldn't waste time writing something for something so obvious, personally.

Agreed.

If you cannot figure out that you need to build a chest to put your stuff in, then this game is too complex for you, and you should check out Chutes and Ladders or Candyland.

The first quest is to plant 15 parsnips when players experience the inventory problem. Most games do not feature chests at all, so how is it obvious for a new player who just started with the game to build a chest in the first minutes? Stardew Valley does not come with a manual and reading the wiki before playing might be overwhelming for new players.

If you already know that you can build chests in the game it might be obvious, but you first need to find the crafting menu and the chest recipe to get this information.

I know how to build and use chests, but the fact that you need to tell everybody who is new to the game to first chop some trees and build a chest before progressing with the first quest is kind of annoying.

For those of you saying "its obvious" there's a very interesting video by Razbuten on YouTube on this subject. It was quite surprising:

This straw man 'new player' doesn't exist. Literally everyone who played this filled their inventory and then looked into (and found) storage options within 60 seconds, note the lack of 'How do I store things?' topics over the past 4 years
