Other times, NPCs will randomly blurt out "Did you know my son absolutely hates 'Stone'?"
There's universal likes and loves. Like, 90% of the town will enjoy or be neutral towards blueberries. Almost everyone hates trash of every kind. (One person in particular actually likes driftwood, while everyone else hates it.) Most people like or love flowers and gems. Most people like artisan goods, like wine or cheese.
Typically, if you're going for no spoilers, I'd say just start by gifting them fruit, flowers and gems. If you make a mistake, you won't cause any irreparable damage. The game keeps track of which gifts you've tried gifting them in the past.
Just as an example, without directly spoiling some of the gifts:
- The girly girl in town likes a certain pink item, and an item the color of her hair.
- The scientist likes items they can use in their lab.
- The jock likes an item that's healthy.
- The emo kid likes emo stuff.
- The skater kid likes junk food.
Most of the NPCs have at least one easy to get "loved" gift, once you figure it out. It's either a matter of trial and error, or just gifting universal likes.
Yes talking to them is good. You may gift them 2 times per week towards friendship points. But also there are other clues about what the NPC's like and dislike as you progress through the game and converse with the other villagers who know them or members of their family. Without giving away any spoilers i can say the game provides clues in a few ways that you will encounter as you progress. Or you can go to the wiki and read everything you need if that is your wish but this may spoil the game for some people.
btw note infos: you can find at least one secret note about each townnpcs likeings (think it was 3 notes in total for that, ever litle lists about several at once)
You can easily get back any lost friendship points so yo don't really need to worry too much about it.
