[SOLVED] Q: How to figure out (dis)liked gifts for NPCs: Getting to know them better or trial & error?
I subscribed a guide for the npc's but hestitated to use it so far.
My question is: How do I figure out the likes/dislikes for gifting. Is it through regular daily conversation with the npc (getting to know them better), or is it about trying out every giftable item in the game and await their response?

You can open the menu and click on Social window and then click on the Villager to see this persons likes and dislikes

TY for reply but does that mean I get to know them better by talking to them (every day), or gift them a random item every day?

Sometimes NPCs will mention it in passing, other times it'll be obvious, or just guessing. A lot of the gifts make sense after you figure it out. (For example, one person in town has palm trees on their wallpaper - they LOVE coconuts.)

Other times, NPCs will randomly blurt out "Did you know my son absolutely hates 'Stone'?"

There's universal likes and loves. Like, 90% of the town will enjoy or be neutral towards blueberries. Almost everyone hates trash of every kind. (One person in particular actually likes driftwood, while everyone else hates it.) Most people like or love flowers and gems. Most people like artisan goods, like wine or cheese.

Typically, if you're going for no spoilers, I'd say just start by gifting them fruit, flowers and gems. If you make a mistake, you won't cause any irreparable damage. The game keeps track of which gifts you've tried gifting them in the past.

Just as an example, without directly spoiling some of the gifts:

- The girly girl in town likes a certain pink item, and an item the color of her hair.
- The scientist likes items they can use in their lab.
- The jock likes an item that's healthy.
- The emo kid likes emo stuff.
- The skater kid likes junk food.

Most of the NPCs have at least one easy to get "loved" gift, once you figure it out. It's either a matter of trial and error, or just gifting universal likes.

Yes talking to them is good. You may gift them 2 times per week towards friendship points. But also there are other clues about what the NPC's like and dislike as you progress through the game and converse with the other villagers who know them or members of their family. Without giving away any spoilers i can say the game provides clues in a few ways that you will encounter as you progress. Or you can go to the wiki and read everything you need if that is your wish but this may spoil the game for some people.

like already mentationed the game keeps now track itself about what npc like/dislike in the npc rooster you can call up. since 1.4 it shows you all items where you know about how the npc stand to it (guess mostly by already giftet to them ones, not sure if it also includes wisdom from talks and note infos)
btw note infos: you can find at least one secret note about each townnpcs likeings (think it was 3 notes in total for that, ever litle lists about several at once)

At least 9 of the secret notes are about loves/likes of the NPCs

Or you can, of course, go to the Stardew Valley wiki, where you'll find everything about the villagers likes ands dislikes (and more importantly, their schedules) in detail.

Thanks everyone! I'll have a look on the wiki for the dislikes only. I'm fine with discovering their neutral<--->likes gifts on my own, but not their dislikes, I dont want to lose friendship points :steamsad:.

The NPC schedules (who is where at which time?) is also very valuable.

You can easily get back any lost friendship points so yo don't really need to worry too much about it.
