Plants randomly die?
Some of my plants randomly die as they're growing. They are watered every day, they are guarded by scarecrows properly, and they are grown in the appropriate season. I have no animals on my farm for them to destroy the crops.

Is it just a given that some will fail? Or am I doing something wrong?

I think if you have some lightning rods on your farm, lightning will be more likely to strike them instead of your crops or anything else, at least until they've all been struck and are charging battery packs... but even with them, there's still a chance that lightning will randomly kill some of your crops.

Most likely as Annie said, they were struck by lightning during a storm.

Lightning sometimes hits trees and then you get coal.

Also keep in mind some of the "wild seed" or seasonal seed crops look like they are dead when they really aren't. If a plant has truly died, it will be removed with your scythe. If it is still alive and growing, the scythe won't hurt it, so that's an easy way to check if you aren't sure.

That reminds me of my first playthrough, when one of my plants died from a lightning storm, but I didn't realize it was dead, so I kept watering it and wondering why that one plant wasn't growing... then accidentally scythed it one day and it disappeared and I was so confused. It wasn't until fall arrived and most of my other crops died and looked the same as that dead one that I realized I'd been lovingly and diligently taking care of a dead plant.
