If you are referring to the box next to your house that starts out on your farm then that is not a chest. It's the shipping box, you throw stuff in there to sell. You make chests by crafting them and whatever you put in them should be in the chest when you click on it to open it. If for some reason you stuff isn't showing up in your chest then no clue, maybe a bug.

Yeah, it sells the stuff overnight. So you go to sleep, it sells the stuff you put in the box and you get some cash when you wake up the next day

If it's still on the same day you put stuff in there, then you can get back at least the last thing you put in the shipping box. When you open the box, the last item shipped should be displayed just click on it to put it back in your inventory.

Yeah. No it wasn't a big mistake. I just put some stuff out of my inventory that I didn't find useful right now to make some more room.

So I can craft chests that I can store items at some point?

Yeah, just go the the crafting tab. Should be able to craft a chest right off, just need 50 wood.

Should the chest be placed inside or does it matter?

It doesn't matter really, put it where it's convenient. Just don't place anything in the path of where a NPC will walk if placing a chest outside of the farm. They will destroy your stuff.

I feel like this was explained in the opening cutscene? Was it not? I know Lewis mentions it if you talk to him around town, but I could've sworn it mentioned it in the opening cutscene. Not trying to be mean, this is just an extremely common problem new players seem to have. I guess they should add a "What would you like to sell?" text box on the crate?

Yeah, it might've been said in the opening, I just read those really fast usually and don't pay much attention. Don't have the longest attention span for these kinds of things usually.
