Completely random, so long as you have two of the same animal although people have claimed animals getting pregnant and only having one of each but I cant verify that. Also the more expensive the animal the lower it's chance of getting pregnant. Rabbits don't breed at all

I've only ever bought one pig and it gave birth to a second one a couple in-game weeks ago. Not sure if it matters but I think all my baby animals have been born in Spring. I assume there needs to be at least one empty space in the parent animal's barn. There is also a toggle button for "Allow pregnancy" on each eligible animal, so if you disable pregnancy on your pig it shouldn't get pregnant.

Do you have a source that shows you need 2? It looks like multiple people (including me) have had animals give birth when they only had one of the type. It doesn't make much sense to need 2 animals of the same type to breed. For one thing all of the goats and cows are definitely female, and I'm pretty sure Marnie refers to all the other animals you buy as female too (literally bought a pig to test this). I think this is like the HM miracle potions except that they kick in randomly (maybe affected by time, hearts or other factors). Similarly, you don't need 2 of the same type of egg-laying animal in order to successfully incubate an egg, even though IRL you'd need a male to make the egg viable.

Baby animals appear magically if you have one adult of that animal and room in your barn/coop.

There is no "pregnancy", they just appear based on the RNG.

Despite only needing one adult animal to produce a baby, the odds of getting a baby increase for every additional adult of the same type. So if you have 11 pigs and one free space in a deluxe barn, your chances of a baby pig appearing are maximum (disregarding other game factors that may apply, like lucky days or items that give luck).

I've read it on the wiki of Stardew Valley somewhere, it could be wrong tho

I had a cow, goat, and a pig. Within the first year of owning the pig it got pregnant and gave birth to my second pig. I can confirm pigs can get pregnant owning only one, but nothing else has gotten pregnant yet.

Unless it's some sort of weird cow-goat-pig hybrid that is going to attack your farmhouse and re-enact Orwells Animal Farm.

I'm not sure which would be scarier...if your character were male, or female.

It's probably magic. Which is proven to exist in Stardew Valley, after all. Magical livestock wouldn't even be the most absurd thing in the game.

I don't see how having more than one increases chances for pregnancy. my animals generally give birth after being on the farm for about a year. the chickens of course go thru the incubator.

which means all those eggs are fertilized so someone is fertilizing the farm animals on a daily basis.
whats intresting is that they are all female like you said so the eggs would have the chicks sperm in it, so your eating/cooking an unborn chicken or worst case turn the soon to be chick into mayo
