2. Fruit trees need 2 spaces between them. So when planting fruit trees, imagine that you're planting a 3x3 block. You can't plant another fruit tree 2 spaces away, it has to be 3 spaces away. Normal trees, however, can be 2 spaces away.
Sometimes though, a fruit tree just doesn't want to grow. Something might be interefering with it's natural growth checks via the game's coding so you might want to replant a new one, possibly in a different spot.

Where "T" is a fruit tree and "s" is a completely clear space. (Planting here is for 4 trees.)
Clear all objects which spawn here with the pickaxe or axe. If you have any paths or other obstructions in any "s" space, you must remove it for your tree to grow. If your tree is in the greenhouse then the border around the planting area is counted as a clear space. This is the only place where a "path" is permitted.
I made the mistake of laying pathing around my tree the first time I played this, so, I started again when I realised.
Once your trees are mature, you can surround them with path/floor to prevent any further contamination with random rocks, grass etc.
make sure there's nothing around it. No seed, no FLOORING, no chest
