Pierre is a lying prick.
I sold a bunch of tomatoes to him, then Marnie is all "I bought this tomato from Pierre, he said he grew it himself, it's fantastic!" and I'm like.... Is he really the lesser of two evils between him and Joja?

Yup, and if it's low quality, Pierre will pin the blame on you.
Tbh, it's not him, it's the whole community Vs joja imo, as I reckon if they could, they would bulldoze the entire town to convert it into a warehouse/distribution center. Instead, they've settled for making a little bit more money from the townspeople, as law, ethics and possibly money are what's stopping them.

Quite the dickmove indeed.

But I guess he really does it for his business. Put all these in real life, imagine if people find out that those fine products actually came from their local farmer, they would skip pierre and just buy them from you, that will reduce cost for them, and pierre would lose some customers. The game is just being too realistic in this aspect, i guess.

the townspeople are just dense, a new farmer shows up in town and all of a sudden pierre is stocked full of fresh produce, no one puts 2&2 together

OP -- Aren't you assuming that your farmer is Pierre's only source of tomatoes? Maybe Pierre does grow some himself.

Farmer Stanley likes to think that Pierre is spending lots of time growing his own produce. That gives Farmer Stanley more time to spend with the lovely Caroline.

Not only will Pierre pass off your own items as his, but also all the fish that you sold to Willie, all the animal products that you sold to Marnie, and all the dishes that you make and sold to Gus.

Puting people in real life, imagine if the local farmer found out that the shop keeper was lying to all his customers and saying that he was growing it all. A shopkeeper needs to be honest about their suppliers as well as respect them.

They are a bit thick. But then I guess no one is going to believe that one person is running around fishing the best fish, mining the best ores, farming the best food and dating the best person in town... (I say best person and be vague, I'm sure everyone has a preference. Either Abigail or Maru for me.)

Who's Farmer Stanley?

Edit: Pierre's a prick strikes again. I sold him a bunch of pumpkins yesterday, and today his wife is asking me for a pumpkin so that his daughter and her can carve one.... What... he couldn't spare a single pumpkin out of the 50 odd I sold him? What a prick.

Farmer Stanley likes to give Caroline and Abigail a pumpkin. He likes to make them both happy.

He especially likes to make Caroline happy, because he wants to find a way to steal her from Pierre, who just doesn't treat her right.

I presume that's what you've named your character?

CA should bring out a new story line where the whole village is evil and back stabbing each other, whilst joja is actually trying to bring peace to the village lol.

Next map I'm siding with joja, heard it opens the greenhouse earlier too, joja ftw!

Nearly everyone in Stardew is an as_hole with a pair of rotten corpses in his/her fridge.

I didn't see those corpses when I was puting beets in there. I will keep an eye out.

Now if only he had made his daughter himself

Whilst a lot of the villagers mention Pierre said he grew them, a few will occassionally ask you if you had sold said item.

I'm pretty sure Pierre actually does grow stuff himself. I believe it's mentioned at the grange festival by Caroline that he has a small garden.

But we do know his schedule for every day from 9am (shop is open) and to 11pm (Pierre goes to sleep). Until 9am Pierre is inside of his house which is closed. And we do know there's no garden inside of it. And there's no gardens outside...
