Move items in chests?
Is there any way to move items in chests? Like if I want to move all my tools to the bottom right of a chest and have all the materials in the top left? I try clicking and dragging and they just pop between my personal inventory and the chest.

It might be easier just to have two seperate chests, one for materials and one for tools. But, if you really want to do what you want to do, you could put the stuff in the chest in your inventory and then put them back in the order you want them to be in.

Tools are arranged by the order you put them in, so moving items to your bag and then moving them into the chest in sequence does allow you to change the order manually. Of course that has... very limited use for most items, since you're moving items all the time and would have to again sort the whole chest each time you do.

In general, to keep things ordered, you probably want to have a lot of chests.

I just make dedicated chests and then use the games auto-sort functions, makes life so much easier. Whenever I start a game I always make three chests to help with my limited inventory. Green chest = tools and farming/foraging items, red chest = everything geological from stone and coal to diamonds and prismatic shards, and then a blue chest for everything fishing related. Once I have those in place I just get into the habit of dumping everything I want to keep in their respective chest at the end of the day and everything else in the shipping bin before going to bed.

I too, use a lot of individual chests. In addition, I use the Chests Anywhere Mod, primarily because it allows me to name all my chests to remind me what I'm keeping in them. After a while, mere memory wasn't enough, even with color-coding.

(Though, to be fair, the mod does have other disablable uses, including the eponymous ability to access any chest from anywhere)

Seems like a weird lessen for a game where you can store a bazillion chests, with all the storage space the worst hoarder in the world will ever need, inside of in a 7x3 shed (or a 5x3 cabin).

As long as the more... arcane stuff doesn't get in the way of the tools that you'll need regularly, I don't see how having all the other stuff could ever be a problem. It's all about having proper organization.

They are though, since game time does not progress when menus are open.

If we're talking about real life time... that's a weird argument in my opinion, since we generally don't apply is to other topics. Like, should we not catch fish because of how it pauses the game and forces you through the minigame? That's most certainly a terrible use of real life time. Thinking in those terms seems to me like it would greatly diminish the enjoyment of the game though.

You could apply this to just about anything in the game: Stop farming when you don't have any need for all that money anymore, it just wastes real life time! Well... yeah, playing the game does in itself. But it's fun, so we are willing to accept this.

There is of course something to be said about "minimalism" as an end in itself: If you enjoy only having necessary things more than organizing a bunch of extra chests, then imho, yeah, totally, go for it - but the idea that you should do this because of some "danger" in collecting things in a game like this doesn't really add up I think.

That's especially true when we're open to using mods, since with the Stack to Nearby Chests[www.nexusmods.com] Mod you can literally empty your territory with one click once you've set things up.

i have 5 color coded chests around my workbench, each sorted for one area of items, so i have all items ever needed for crafting at the workbench.
on top of that one drawer for all wearable items and 1 chest for special items and tools.
all needed for cooking goes into 4 fridges.

and that is all ever needed as storagespace
