What to sell
Any tips on what to sell? Every time I sell something I find out that I needed that resource for something like crafting/an upgrade etc... So what's considered disposable and can be sold?

Most common resources should be saved. Fiber, wood, stone, metal, coal, bat wings, slime, solar and void essence, etc.

Stuff like gems, fish, crops, extra weapons and gear, forage should be saved.

Quartz, fire quartz and earth crystals are all fairly common minerals that are used in less common crafting recipes.

Void eggs are rare, but not irreplacable. Dinosaur egg and prismatic shard are two artifacts worth holding onto, rather than donating to the museum.

I recommend saving one of every common gem, as sometimes NPCs want them on the town job board, and will pay triple price, and get a small friendship boost. (Example, diamonds sell for 750, but you get like 2150 for giving it to a villager when requested.)

I can't think of what item you'd be selling that you need for an upgrade? All that comes to mind are metal bars, wood, stone, coal, maybe batteries? What did you sell?

Unless you meant the Community Center, which can be frustrating - I'd check a guide for that if you're having issues.

Well currently I'm stuck on 900 gold and all I've been selling is crops, but it's taking ages for them to grow and I'm getting almost nothing done. I can't buy a backpack upgrade cause I don't have enough money, and I run out of energy by 10am every day so I can't chop trees, mine etc... I've got lots of stone, wood, copper etc... but I don't know if I should sell it or not/what's best to sell

Uhhh... Have you tried foraging and fishing? You can eat your forage and fish for energy. You probably shouldn't have more than 40 crops max with the beginner watering can. About halfway through spring, berries start appearing on bushes all over the place. Check your TV every day for "Living Off the Land" show, it'll tell you when the berries start appearing - or you might just notice them when you're walking around.

I HEAVILY recommend spending some time harvesting berries every day for a week, or however long the bushes have berries.

You can also repair a bridge at the beach, with 300 wood, to find more coral and stuff to sell.

Basically, what I would recommend...

1. Plant the 15(?) parsnip seeds you get for free at the beginning of the game.
2. Use your 500g to buy a few more potato seeds.
3. Sell the crops as they grow, and upgrade - instead of selling 15 parsnips and buying 30 parsnip seeds, sell 15 parsnips and buy 15 potato seeds. Do NOT go over 40 crops until you upgrade your watering can or get sprinklers.
4. As your crops grow, check the woods to the south of your farm for spring onions (in the southeast corner of the woods, by the oak/maple trees) and other forage (dandelions, horseradish, daffodil)
5. Sell or gift the daffodils. Eat the horseradish and dandelions. Alternatively, make them into Spring Seeds and plant them - forage isn't worth much, but they're basically free seeds to help level up your Foraging skill faster.
6. As your crops grow, continue checking the beach and forest for things to sell. Once you're done with this, I recommend fishing at the mountain lake for more money.
7. The early mines are bad for money and energy; I highly recommend avoiding them until you have enough money and energy balance to go deep. There's no point entering the mines if you'll run out of energy on level 3.

I'm currently only just starting Stardew on the PC, however I play it on the switch. Year 3. People say don't sell rescources, and I do agree but it gets you really far selling them in the beginning of the game. I now have a shed full of the crsytal-machine thingys, and they're all producing diamonds. Every geode i crack open, I take to the muesum first, then sell them on otherwise. CROPS MAKE MONEY. A lot of money, wait until you get your Green house and the money will roll in!

Thanks for the tips guys!

Try to keep at lease one of everything. You never know what could be a good gift (if you care about that) or when someone requests for an item.

I suggest making a shed. But besides that, if it is a "Trash" item, use one of those Recycle Machines to get better items out of it then just throwing it away.

Sam likes Joja Colas too so...

Nice thing about foraging is it doesn't cost you energy and you'll be doing it a lot in your first year. But I am with everyone who has said save a little bit at a time. Don't over do it. Since chests are crucial, you can also always chop those broken branches on the ground since they don't require as much chops like a regular tree. First few crafting things you should do is a chest and/or scarcrow.

About the chests themselves, color coordinate them. Over time I put similar items in different chests because it's so much easier to find the things I need. Like my first chest is mostly stuff used from crafting, including wood, stones, minerals. 2nd chest are my crops, 3rd- fish, 4th- Seeds, etc. I even put chests in my house at one point for my meals and keg products.

Hope this helps.
if you want money

plant

coliflower in spring
blueberries/melons in summer (and starfruit if you have unlocked the bus)
cranberries,pumpkins,artichoke in fall

If you want to jumpstart your gold at the beginning of a playthrough, you can always do Fishing.

Grab 50,000g before the Egg Festival on the 13th. Buy a Fiberglass rod with Bait as soon as you can, with backpacks when you can afford them. Use the fish with the best Energy-per-gold ratio to regain Energy whenever you need. On the day of the festival, take the morning to till and fertilize the soil, then buy a couple hundred Strawberry Seeds (it'll only cost 20,000g) and plant/water them in the evening, still using some leftover fish or Salads to regain Energy as needed.

You'll get 400+ Strawberries before summer. That's a lot of gold and Farming level 8.

The more you grind the first season the better I put all of profit into farming parsnips/potatos the first spring over and over until the season ended. I didn't earn the million gold earned achievement until almost my third year. Just grind out the first season then priortize what you like! Honestly though play how you want, I have a friend that all he wanted to do was fish, didn't plant a single crop and eventualy went over into livestock.
