I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work. Also, given the cost of cabins, you could just try it.
If you want spare tools now, you need an actual player, and they must take their own tools out of their inventory and put them into a chest or something for you.
If you have a friend who doesn't mind logging in to your game for a few minutes just for this favor, it's really handy to have a second watering can, or spare axe/pick while yours are being upgraded.
I always make a cabin and use my spare controller to make a second character just long enough to clear the furniture (except the bed) so I can use the cabin as a small shed and move the tools and free seeds into a chest outside, then put them in bed and continue playing with my main profile until the next in-game day. Once the game has saved just return to main menu and continue in single-player mode.
Can also use the other controller again later to upgrade the cabin.
