Hve you been petting the animals every day? They loose hearts if you don't pet them.

Yeah, been petting them every day, but since they started going out to graze, just seems like they lost a lot of points

Luck has a factor in quality

no it doesn't..

from the wiki:

Effects
Luck affects the following:
Amount of wood dropped from trees
Chance of getting coal from rocks
Chance to discover ladders while Mining.
Quality of ore from Panning.
Geode drop chance.
(Luck does not increase the chance to receive rare gems and artifacts from geodes.)
Drop chance of Duck Feather and Rabbit's Foot.
Chance of getting items from Garbage Cans and the chance the item is not trash.
Chance your spouse will be jealous after giving a gift to another marriage candidate.
Chance of treasure appearing while Fishing.
Chance of getting Neptune's Glaive from Fishing Treasure Chests.
Results of playing slots at the Casino.
Amount of lightning during a storm.
Number of extra crops yielded at harvest, for crops that allow extra harvests (i.e., Coffee Bean, Potato, Tomato, Blueberry, Hot Pepper, Eggplant, Cranberry, and Strawberry).

I have experienced the same thing as OP..I get iridium grade eggs or milk only in winter when the barn/coop doors are closed and they are eating hay..and hardly get any iridium grade products in the other seasons..even on the first few days of spring when I kept the barn/coop doors closed for a few days while I planted some grass starters outside and waiting for the grass to grow..the product quality just dropped..

I remember seeing some comments in a thread talking about..'you have to pet the animals before they go outside to eat grass so you have to close the barn/coop door everynight' or something? (sorry I can't remember where that thread is)..Tripoteur do you remember that thread?..

How'd you know I'd be skimming your whole post? I almost skipped the rest of your last paragraph because the first line alone was enough to know exactly what you're referring to.

There used to be a bug where Mood was set to the max (255) when the animals went out to feed. Petting them raised their mood slightly (5 points, I think? No sure), except the variable wasn't properly capped at 255. Adding 5 Mood made the variable go over from 255 up to 5.

In other words, petting your animal after releasing them would make their mood go from 255 to 5. Which is why you had to pet them before.

People are suspecting that this bug has since then been fixed, but... since the Mood stat is hidden and clearly variable, no one knows what's up with animals exactly.

My own cows might give me Iridium-quality Large Milk one day and no-quality small Milk the next, with no apparent reason.

No, it's not winter, wish it was, spring screwed my quality up, got the iridium in winter and in spring, I get nothing

I had a similar thing happen recently (they were fine in Winter and now in spring they're angry/hungry), either I ran out of hay or moving my silos lost all the hay I had built up, and now my animals are angry/hungry even though I'm letting them out to graze daily. Check your hay, could be part of it.

Have plenty of hay, never moved it, and I fill it a lot by going around cutting grass around my farm, not sure what is going on, but know it isn;t that

I encountered this problem myself. Animals were regularly producing Gold/Iridium quality during Winter, then as soon as Spring rolled around, Quality took a HUGE dive! No indication of hearts decreasing, and animals are happy as can be, pet them daily, let them out to graze when not winter...but the quality of their goods just hasn't been the same

My animals all give iridium quality during Winter which invariably drops and becomes highly unreliable in Spring. I assumed this was because they are programmed to prefer their heated delux barn. Would be interested to know if there is a more logical explanation.

Its because if you don't go to bed by 5-6 pm during the three seasons the heater isn't keeping them constantly happy... you lose tons of happiness quickly. Basically they quickly start losing the daily "bonus" towards product quality for every ten minutes past 5 pm you are awake with the bonus being entirely lost by 8 pm.

It seems like the happiness bug is still there, I still have the same thing going on too. The more I pet them during spring, summer, and fall, the more low quality items there are.

If you don't mind Mods, I suggest using Mood Guard. It says it counteracts the "staying out after 6pm" bug. It also has other modes that you can set, like one that is suppose to keep your animals at max happiness at all times no matter what. I don't use this mode myself cause it seems a little like cheating. ;P But I do use the normal mode so I can stay out after 6pm. You need SMAPI to run it, but I love it.

Spring doesn't have a lot of grass for them to feed on. If you don't have grass outside for them to eat, some will come into the barn hungry. Even if you have hay inside the barn, this seems to happen sometimes.

I either keep them inside the barn until there's enough grass outside for them to feed on reliably or plant grass early so they can eat it.
