Linus shouldn't give money as a quest reward, he should give specialty items
Linus is a homeless man in a tent. He shouldn't be handing me $1000 for getting him an item when he's eating out of bins...instead perhaps he should offer Linus only items? Perhaps even junk items.

Perhaps he can make some extremely alcoholic moonshine or something that makes us see rainbows and gives us unlimited energy for 2 game hours before causing us to crash out at basically exhausted and we wake up with half health the next morning.

If he can craft perhaps he can give little wittled sculptures we can add to our homes. Perhaps Robin can make us a toy chest to put little toys he whittles in for our toddlers and children? Perhaps they can even play with them?

Perhaps he can offer a tin can sculpture or trash furniture? Like a sofa chair made of soda cans?

Perhaps he can find rare weapons and "suppose" they are worthless or they're broken and we can take them to the guild where they can repair them.

Perhaps he can make soup on his fireplace and he offers some to us.

There's so many options, Linus is effectively a very special character being wasted at the moment.

I think it's just because it's the default and CA didn't feel like giving certain characters special rewards. Otherwise, there'd be one character better than all the rest.

I would call it leveraging your characters personalities, not making one better than the others lol.

Well what I mean is, for example
I befriended Emily simply because she sometimes sends wool or cloth, and I needed 4 for a mill... It was way cheaper to do this than to fully upgrade a coop and buy rabbits

If you befriend Kent, he'll send you free bombs, which are extremely useful at end-game for the mines

Clint will send you metal bars in the mail

Compared to befriending people like, say, Lewis or Jodi, you just get a snack or maybe some fertilizer in the mail. Some NPCs are obviously better than others.

Back to the original topic: I'd be afraid that certain villagers having unique rewards would cause a hierarchy of who's important.

I'd be okay if it was just like... non-unique rewards, I guess.
Like you help Robin, and she gives you 200 wood. You help Demetrius, you get a battery. You help Linus, you get 5 things of sashimi. Willy gives either fishing dishes (clam chowder, for example) or hard to catch fish, like 3 squids.

But Harvest Moon had unique rewards for helping certain villagers, and I hated that. If I remember right, one villager gave the best watering can, one gave an item that upgraded EVERY food item, etc.

It'd be like if you had to befriend Marnie for an iridium watering can, or you can befriend Demetrius for iridium sprinklers. You're stuck with the bamboo fishing rod until you befriend Willy.

Or on a less serious note, it could just be decorations, but still... My point being I think people should befriend people because they want to, not because they have to. No one villager should give a unique item... but that's just my opinion. I'm sure one of the other forum regulars will disagree with me. :P

Not if he's American lol

Also you have to have a residential address to recieve government benefits, and they are very little, even for someone homeless.

Ingame you can still make decent money purely foraging. He hangs around the mountain lake a lot too so hes probably just grabbing carp with his bare hands to sell.
He's also one of the first lines of defense incase monsters learn to climb ladders and exit the mine, that garment he wears is actually golden scale armour and Linus is infact a retired adventurer sitting a dragon's hoarde of gold literally under his tent. It's why he asks you not to destroy it because it's the only thing big enough to cover the tunnel to his booty.

Or maybe its just a game.

But if he were able to do all that he wouldn't be living in a freaking tent. It doesn't make sense.

He lives the way he wants to live. No harm in that.

some rich people live like beggars. some people are just crazy.
linus may well have savings and assests but simply walked away to get back to nature or some such. people have done stranger things.

plenty of trendy hippies eat out of bins too its called freeating and has nothing to do with poverty.

That would be less outrageous if he didn't have a cutscene explaining he eats out of bins to survive.

Nawh he actually explains that the food that the people are throwing away would go to waste, not that he does it explicitly to survive. He also states he's not harming anyone by doing it, he's just making sure nothing is wasted.

The fact that he happens to be hungry doesn't mean he's starving to death or anything.
