However, you could run around your farm hoeing every bit of farming soil available. Clay will pop out once in a while. I think it's a bit more frequent in the mine, though, even in levels 1-40, though of couse there's less ground to hoe.
Plus, you must have some Clay already. You've been to level 40 of the Mines so it's not your first day; you'd have to have been insanely unlucky never to get any on your farm, in worms or in geodes.
Should be very quick to get up to 10 Clay.
I'm not sure either, but whenever I went Artifact-hunting, I always came back with 25-40 Clay. Lots of stuff popping up everywhere.
I tried on the beach once, tilled 72 tiles and got absolutely nothing. I just assumed it couldn't actually generate any Clay. It's sand, after all.
I've gotten clay from the beach before. Wiki also says you can get clay from sand. The desert is a good place too, but that's late game. I've also gone artifact hunting in the mines never got that much clay. Maybe you tilled much more soil than I did.
