Game won't open
Hey everyone, for some reason Stardew Valley will not open when I try to start it up. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it multiple times, shut down my firewalls, and verified the game cache.

Any idea why it won't open anymore?

Here's the standard fixes I recommend, in the approximate order you should try them. (Be sure to test the game between each step):
  1. Verify the cache.
  2. Plug in headphones.
  3. Delete startup_preferences.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Delete %appdata%/Stardew Valley. It is a hidden file, so search for it directly through windows search. (Backup your saves, beforehand)
  6. Disable Antivirus
  7. Run as administrator
  8. Reinstall the game.
  9. Reinstall XNA.
  10. Reinstall directx9.
  11. Update graphics drivers and sound card drivers.

Go to %appdata%/StardewValley, it should be in there. (It may be hidden, so enable the viewing of hidden files.)

Go to file explorer, and click the checkbox in the view tab.

I was having the same issue. Start the game in steam, steam shows it's running then nothing. Found that if you go into the folder that SDV is installed under, right click the .exe file, choose "create shortcut", and drag that shortcut to your desktop and launch from there. Steam's been being a bit wonky for the past few months. A couple of my friends are having the same issue, and this seems to be the only work around atm.

Maybe this is a waste of time but .. try going to _CommonRedist on the Stardew Valley folder and install the programs that are in there

This, plus verifying the cache worked for me. Thank you!

Might try this out since I uninstalled, reinstalled and played the game for maybe 3 hours and now it's refusing to work again...

What should I install in the _CommonRedist folder? Should i install the contents of both folders and if so how?

(I'm also surprised I can't find a troubleshooting guide for this problem in the community as of yet but maybe that's just me)

There should be an XNA exe buried in there somewhere - click it and it should update it automatically.

XNAfx40_redist right? And the file type is a Windows Installer Package?

(might start a guide to help those in need of guidence in regards to this start up issue)

I actually started one of those, but never released it because there wasn't enough instances of it happening... I suppose I should do that.

Edit: Just unprivated it, here's my WIP guide: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=778323809

Tried just about everything, even tried running the application as administator and still nothing comes up. Reinstalled, verified cache, installed whatever was in the _CommonRedist folder as well but it still won't run... Poo...
