Ways I know off the top are dig spots, monster drops, fishing treasure, and since gems and minerals are donateable.. opening geodes.

an easier way is too dig up dirt spots in the mine, and if you have the desert unlocked, Sandy, the shopkeep there, sells geodes sometimes for pretty cheap.

Work hard and get a ton of money, then go to Sandy on Wednesday and buy 100 of those omni geodes, then take them to Clint to crack open. It will only cost you 100,000 gold, plus a small honorarium to Clint for opening them up for you.

Rinse and repeat every Wednesday.
