Why no pause button?

I am surprised that there is no pause button in Stardew Valley. I would find it very useful to pause the game while I plan my farm layout to decide where to position the sprinklers etc. I would also like to pause the game after watering my crops to make sure I haven't missed anything or in the mines when attacked by multiple enemies to decide whether to fight or flee.

The mechanics of pausing the game can't be a problem. The game pauses now when you check your inventory or eat a snack or interact with other villagers or reel in a fish. However each of those actions obscure the screen in some way.

All I can think of is that this is a deliberate gameplay decision.

Would other players like to see a separate pause button?

You are quite correct, /pause in chat does pause the game just as I wanted. Thanks.

I haven't played multiplayer and didn't even realise there was a chat option.

V1.4 has a tool that may meet your needs. Open Inventory, go to the Controls tab, scroll to the very bottom, and you can get a screenshot not only of your unobstructed screen, but of your entire current map. It's actually so cool I feel guilty like I am cheating. I can see everybody and all the forageables in town at the same time.

They used to be(?) a regular on these forums and that was just kinda how they talked. Sometimes they were helpful if a little rude, but a lot of times... ehhh...
