Or it's sister series, the Rune Factory series.
(All of them except for Rune Factory Frontier and Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny are in 2D)
Similar to Story of Seasons, it has farming and socializing, but also includes combat similar to Stardew Valley (though with magic as an option, as well as the ability to craft weapons and armor).
And yes, it has crafting/cooking as well.
------
(I haven't played Natsume's brand new Harvest Moon games, so I couldn't tell you how good they are.
(Starting with Harvest Moon: Lost Valley, Harvest Moon is now a brand-new series Natsume produces, which has nothing to do with the prior games of that name. That's why I made that joke above.))
Ive played rune factory 4. Is it worth it to play the first three rune factories or is it pretty much the same?
This one is great too, gamplay wise you won''t notice it''s 3d. I prefere Stardew Valey. But it is worth your time.
I've only played RF2, 3, and Frontier.
So I'm not sure how RF4 compares to them.
-------
But RF3 in particular has the mechanic of your character being able to switch between his human form and a Wooly form (a wild sheep-like monster).
It also introduced the ability to get NPCs to join you in dungeons, as most of them can fight.
Your goal is that game is to get the humans and univir (humanoids with unicorn horms) to end their racism and co-exist.
------
RF2 was...kinda "meh", to me.
I wasn't a fan of the "everything is locked for your character, until he vanishes and your son/daughter becomes the character you play as" aspect.
That said, the generation concept was kinda cool.
I like how they even had a special character (Yue) added, whose purpose is to marry the guy whose destined girl you stole.
(Such as, Jake is destined to marry Cecilia and have a son with her. But if you marry Cecilia instead, then Jake eventually marries Yue, and they have a son)
(It was an okay game. I just didn't like the upgrades and deeper levels of the dungeons being locked for the first generation)
-------
RF: Frontier is a really good Rune Factory game. And I recommend it.
But it does have 3D graphics.
Although, to be fair, it's still a fixed-camera game.
The camera faces one direction at all times, so there's no rotation, so it's not a "true" 3D, if that's what worries you.
(Is that considered 2.5D?)
In a way, it really is like the 2D games, only in better detail, and with the camera level and closer to the ground.
(In the overworld, anyways. (In the dungeons, it's the standard 2.5D view that RF4 has.))
--------
From what I've read, RF4 added some features to the series, so you won't see: customizing the town, taming boss monsters, multiplayer, or customizing your house's layout.
It birthed the entire genre.
