I think its funny that you say the game is easy to code for, yet you think implementing the mods is a hassle? Trust me, spend the 5 minutes it takes to learn the modding method. Its literally as easy as the above posts outline. Back in the day modding was -so- much more involved than it is today.
I've just been through the process of installing mods.
It was grind to say the least. And I only wanted two mods!
As a consequence I now play the game directly through Smapi and not through steam. I lose steam achievements, whatever they might be.
It took me approx. 5 hours to get two mods and not able to play through steam if I want to use them and I only downloaded Smappi and not the content manager part.
The files, even after unzipping, would all download as VLC media files. To say it's frustrating is an understatement.
5 hours?! I don't know how that happened, but when I got a new computer and reinstalled the game, it probably took me 10 minutes at the most to install Smapi + 6 mods.
Edit: And that includes configuring the Steam settings to allow achievements too.
