Basicly the 8 squares around the tree have to be empty of player placed items in order for the tree to grow

You can place one tree along the back wall, two spaces to the right of the trough, and it should grow just fine. The tree you have in the far left corner should also grow fine, if you move the sprinkler away.
Interesting... I started my latest four-corners farm with the latest vanilla version 1.4 on my PC and the game updates are current and up to date. I have one apple tree and one orange tree at the back of the greenhouse in the middle where the water trough is and they are growing and producing fruit just fine since the beginning. They are located in the exact same position as is shown in Chompman's diagram at this link:

So maybe Snowy Sprout is using a different farm or update?
But mine works fine with the four tiles occupied by the background drawing of the water trough directly behind the trees...
It's been ages since I've played and couldn't figure out why my sprinkler's weren't working correctly. I put the quality ones there as a temp solution and intended to go back and tweak things again, but just forgot.
I'm not using mods or cheats, so buying fruit trees takes a bit of time and if I need to destroy any, just wanted to make sure I place them down correctly the next time.
