I dont think regular trees have a spacing requirement, but I always leave a space between my trees just to facilitate getting around them

they just need one space, only the fruit trees need two spaces.

Trees are funny. They will drop seedlings that will grow close to the tree. If they are too close they will reach a certain size and then stop growing until you cut the larger tree down. At that point it will reach full size either overnight or in a few game days. In that way trees that are left to grow can become impassable.

TLDR Cut all the big ones down and they'll grow back really quickly. If you need more. plant seedlings every other space and weed out the seeds they drop.

They just won't grow if there is a fully grown tree within the 3x3 grid. So you can plant them and they'll fully grow next to anything except another tree.

And don't forget the new tree fertiliser - put this on a newly planted see and they'll pop up one stage of growth each day, giving you a fully grown tree in 5 days.
