But for min/maxing copper pick is probably better just so you're not wasting as much energy going deeper in the mine since you start 1 shotting denser small stones and I think it brings copper ore veins from 5 to 3 swings.
If you're upgrading your axe first, I recommend giving it to Clint, then spending the following days mining to get more copper than you currently need.
If you're upgrading pickaxe first, I recommend getting the 5 bars, then upgrading it, then spend the remaining few days fishing for money.
Typically, I'll go:
Spring-ish:
- Upgrade pickaxe to copper
- Backpack upgrade
- Upgrade watering can to copper
- Upgrade axe to copper
Summer-ish:
- Upgrade pickaxe to iron
- Upgrade axe to iron
- Make sprinklers
- Upgrade hoe to copper
- If there's time, upgrade watering can to iron
Autumn-ish:
- Upgrade pickaxe to gold
- Make more sprinklers
- Final backpack upgrade
- Upgrade watering can to gold
- Upgrade axe to gold
- Upgrade hoe to iron
- Upgrade hoe to gold
Winter-ish (if Skull Caverns unlocked)
- Iridium pickaxe
- Iridium band
- Grind out dust sprites for the burglar's ring
- With both rings, resume grinding Skull Caverns
- Iridium sprinklers
- Iridium axe
- Iridium hoe
- Iridium watering can
But I upgrade my backpack as early as possible, before upgrading any tools, so I can carry more. Carrying more = more to sell!
I don't bother with upgrading my watering can, instead I focus on getting deeper into the mines (upgrading my pick as I go) to get the materials for quality sprinklers.
Beyond iron, you don't really need an upgraded axe for anything other than convenience.
