There shouldn't be a serious issues if versions are same (which is kinda possible, since last stable release was a year ago).
No, you did a wrong thing.

The game is cheap, currently on sale, and has overwhelmingly positive reviews. (Steam's choice of words.) It's one of the top 10 games on Steam, and it's made it to every major game console. Obviously the game is good and popular, so the risk of you hating it is low... but Steam also offers refunds for people who do hate it.
If they just pirated the game and left it at that, I'd understand. They just don't want to spend money. But then paying for the game after pirating it?
If you want to be cheap and steal, just do that.
If you want to see if it's good or not, just buy it and refund it if it's bad.
I just don't understand stealing something, then coming and paying for it later.
At best, it's a way to test if the game actually WORKS on your system, but to determine if you like the game...? That won't work with alot of games.
So i can't really blame people for testing out a game in less than legal ways before buying it.
But to be more on-topic, i guess that wiki link that was posted is probably more then enough info.
Though what is the issue anyway, will it display but not load the save file, or won't it read it at all?
In case of the latter, maybe you need to put your character's folder that has the save data within it inside C:\Users\[user_name]\AppData\Roaming\StardewValley\Saves, so that if you do that and go to that folder, that you'll then see a folder named "[playername]_[randomnumbers]", with your character's savedata inside it.
And hopefully then, the game will see and load your savedata. If not, well, not sure. A fresh start may be refreshing though, who knows how many things got changed from the less-than-legal version?
this thread will be closed by mods tho...
Because this takes effort, and requires you to go through steps that many people find otherwise annoyingm ad often aren't aware of. It also punishes developers more, because refunds are worse to see on their statistics than things like dislikes / single low ratings. By pirating to test out a game, you can also take your sweet time determining if a game is worth it or not for you - and, judging by the number of people I see downvoting a game after having put 20+ (sometimes even 100+) hours into a game, apparently some people are garbage at making up thier minds. Also, a large percentage of steam users seem unaware that you can refund a game even beyond the 2 week / 2 hour timeframe as long as you can give steam support a good reason why it took you longer than that to decide you didn't like it. Mix that in with how a lot of games are very good at front-loading their content while lacking long-term replayability that doesn't necessarily show until you're several hours in (or 10s of hours in, even, depending on the game), there's plenty of good reason to want an option other than buying a game and hoping that steam will refund it.
For complex games the 2 hours you can play a game before refunding it aren't really enough to get a good impression.
And if you really liked teh game it's the right thing to buy it to support the devs.
Even the rls groups tell you to do this in their nfs, examples from various nfos and groups:
"10. Support the companies, which software you actually enjoy!"
"Support the software developers. If you like this game, BUY IT!!"
"[ 6 ] If U like it, buy it!"
"SUPPORT THE COMPANIES THAT PRODUCE QUALITY SOFTWARE!
IF YOU ENJOYED THIS PRODUCT, BUY IT! SOFTWARE AUTHORS DESERVE SUPPORT!!"
