Quest items become gifts

So this keeps happening, I grab quest items and go to give them to the various npcs, but what happens is they take one of the items as a gift instead, meaning that now I'm short the stuff needed for the quest. How do I avoid this?

Depends on the type of quest.

If someone asks for, say, a dandelion, you use the dandelion on them.

When Clint asks for ore, you just gather from the mines, or withdraw say, 35 ore from a chest, then you'll hear a little chime when you collect enough. Then you just talk to him - don't even need the ores in your inventory.

As for Willy requesting fish, I'm not sure - I never do those. I guess try talking to him first, and using them on him afterwards?

Willy is the one I have the most trouble with when it comes to this issue. I try to drop the fish and pick it back up but no dice

Might be a dumb question, but are you actually catching the fish? I'm pretty sure his quest is to catch the fish, not pull them out of a chest.

Guess that would be it. I'm not a fan of the fishing mechanic so I hoard whatever I catch for later. I was trying to avoid the catching bit and just use what I had available already

Yeah, they're typically not worth doing, because you have to cancel your plans for the day to get them since they're usually river or ocean fish, and most people fish in the lake when they do fish. He never asks for just cod or something, it's always sardines or catfish. Sometimes he asks for fish that only come out when it rains. It's just not worth it unless you're a hardcore fisherman and want to befriend Willy.

From what I remember, for Willy asking you to catch fish, he wants to actually catch it. If you already have one in your inventory, that won't complete his help request.

Correct. He doesn't want you to cheat your way out like Clint :P
