I remember getting the rusty key some time ago. I think that i either trashed it or sold it. Now I need that key, is there anyway to get the key again or do I just start completly over

That's the key from Gunther yeah? I don't even think you can junk it, you might be misremembering. Check your character menus, the key should be in some special items slot and can't be removed for you to use whenever necessary.

the rusty key is located in your wallet... like every special "item".

you can't equip it, you can't trash it, you can't do anything with it.

its presense only tells you that you have free access to the Sewer.
