It's not that.
You need hay in your farm. That grass that is not grass and you cut with the scyle. If you have a silo you'll get hay whenever you cut that with the scyle. It'll be put in your silo when cutting it.

How grass starters work: You plant them a few squares/spaces apart. Every day or two, they'll spread about half a tile. So within a week you'll go from 1 tile to like 9. And within 2 weeks, you'll have like 20. If you just place a grass started outside your barn, your animals will eat it immediately, and no more grass will grow. What you can do is place something like a lightning rod over the starter, and the cows/chickens won't be able to eat it, but the grass will still spread.

How silos work: If there's room in your silo, and you use your scythe to cut grass, a little hay icon will appear over your head to signify you're gathering gay. Using the sword to cut grass doesn't work. You can right-click your silo to check how full it is. To withdraw hay, you must have a coop or barn; when you go to withdraw hay from the hopper in the coop/barn, you can withdraw it all if you just hold down right-click. Otherwise, it'll take out the exact amount you need. (If your feeding trough can hold 8 pieces of hay, but you have 2 chickens, then it'll withdraw 2 pieces of hay, not 8.)
