Maple tree not growing past sapling
I planted a maple tree 2 spaces away from the fence (looks like 2 but I can only plough 1). The tree appears to have grown to the sapling stage but has now stopped. Have I done something wrong? Do I need to rethink my planting format?

You're probably OK. Normal (non-fruit) trees grow at a quasi-random rate--each day they have a chance to move up to the next growth stage (seed-->shrub-->sapling-->tree), if you plant 20 trees you're bound to have at least one that reaches adulthood in under a week and at least one that takes all season, so there's a bit of luck involved.

yep, i planted 64 trees for my tap farmin and i have several fully grown in less then a week while some are still in their seed form

Once per day, each tree or seed has a 20% chance of growing if it's not already fully-grown, and the season isn't winter

Trees can be planted next to stones, ponds, cliff edges and even the greenhouse and still grow to full maturity provided they are not next to another tree. Pathing such as cobblestones have no effect on tree growth.

Most times Trees take about 18 days. The growth time is random for the most part that is each sappling only has a chance to grow. It isn't like crops where, if you water ever day, are growing every day. It can take up to 46 days for a tree to grow to full. Also Sapplings will not grow if something is next to them so you need to make sure there is a one block space around each tree.

I have one spot where a maple tree just refuses to grow.

It is not by a wall. It is not by a cliff or building. I have made sure there is nothing on the ground around it.. And it is on the same 2-space spacing that I use for fruit trees.

But the seed for the longest time refused to grow beyond stage 1.

It is finally growing, but after more than a year, it is still a sapling, while everything around it flourishes.

Makes me wonder if there isn't some kind of location factor in the random generator in that growth equation.
