Catching garbage in crab pots shouldn't require bait.
Title.

I agree, personally i think crab pots should be buffed. They're pretty useless unless you go the crab pot path in the skill tree but that is totally not worth forsaking the increased price of fish (which rarer fish can be hella expensive) to finding more treasures. Personally I write off crab pots entirely, they're simply not worth it imo.

Crab pots are great if you mass them. Bait costs 5 GP. takes no more time to set the bait and lot the loot every day.

trash with a recycler is worth about 75 gold, fish with fish increasing value is worth a minimum of 75 with sashimi and maximum of 180 with both value increasing perks.

crab pots if you need coal or refined quartz are worth it.
Crab pots if you need fishing XP are worth it.

Money wise, I'd have to do some tests but I'm pretty sure I can make screw it lets do a test.
Okay but it makes no logical sense that you would need bait to catch garbage.

red255,

your test requires comparison to regular fishing within the same amount of time it took to gather and reload those pots.
Also a gold income comparison of the two.

after that, we would have a much clearer picture.
As it is tho, I imagine the pots seem overpowered in comparison.

How dare you bring a control group into this experiment!

I have 2 small crab pot setups (freshwater and saltwater) that work pretty well because each includes 3 crab pots, a recycler and a worm bin. The worm bin generates more bait than the 3 pots need but that's if the bait is collected immediately from the worm bin when produced and loaded into the crab pots as soon as needed (I'm using the Automate mod that lets you hook machines up to each other). I'm not sure how good the worm bin is if you have to check it manually. They're still not a major source of income for me. I just have them so I always have the right cooking ingredients and convenient gifts for Elliot.

For RP purposes, fresh bait is better than stale bait and it's normal to refresh the bait in your crab traps when you check them. Your character is just silently tossing the stale bait into the water when you collect the trash.
