Do relationship hearts go down over time?

I noticed that one person I had 5 hearts with has gone down to 3 now, and I had not given them any gifts since the previous season when they had their birthday. And I definitely did not give them any gifts they did not like that would cause worsening of relations.

Oh good to know thanks. I did not realise that talking boosts relations, I thought only gifts do that.

I usually do those, talk to them and toss them a gift

the board is worth 150, two loved gifts are worth 160,

Board +talking is worth 160-170

2 loved gifts +talking is worth 180-200.

you can give them 2 gifts a week + you can always give a gift on their birthday.

irridium star loved gifts are worth 120. Irridium star loved gifts on their birthday are worth almost 4 hearts.

Ignoring them over a long period of time will gradually cause their relationship values to go down. Even just talking to them once per day can prevent "decay" on friendship. Also, when their hearts are maxed out (8 for bachelor/bachelorettes, 10 for everyone else) then friendship will no longer decay and it'll stay at maximum. The only exception is your spouse who will always continue to decay in friendship if you don't talk to them every day.

I remember one of the community centre quests gives you a boost of hearts with everyone, which is a good opportunity if you don't waste time and max your hearts with everybody so they never decline again.
