There's no real set or established number, but I generally try to have at least 3-4 tiles per animal in their yard. And if you're buting grass starters, get at least 1 per animal, maybe even 2 per, spread them out in the yard, and drop a fence post or a lightning rod or something on a bunch of them to make sure the animals don't eat all the sources. It's kind of a learning curve getting it right, but you'll get it. :slimehappy: And if it takes you a few tries, all you're gonna lose out on is the cost of a few more grass starters.

a good trick to use is put a lightning rod on some grass and animals cant eat it yet it still grows

I don't recommend this. They'll eat all the grass before it can grow.

Or, you could just do it the way I do it, and just don't put any fences anywhere, and let grass grow randomly around my land until it grows to more than I need, and I just deal with the fact that I'm going to have to hunt around to find my animals to pet them. (I have the UI Info Suite mod, so I can see the "Animal hasn't been petted yet" icon even if the animal is behind a tree/building/whatever.

Fence in your agricultural farming land so that the animals do not get in your way when planting, harvesting etc. Your animals then have the rest of your land to graze, They may not get home at night, occassionally, but, they seem to always be in the barn or coop in the morning.
