it is random, not sure if it is rare. They can fall in odd places. I had one in the middle of the big pond, a friend had one fall on the path south of the farm. He had to go to town to get to the travelling merchant. Someone once posted a picture of one on top of his greenhouse

The meteor is forced to happen around that time I believe. It's at least supposed to happen in the year.

The iridium is useful. Not rare either persay. At least, not rare once you get access to the skull mine.

iirc I hear that meteor drop is a 1% chance of that event happening. So regardless if the validity of the number, pretty sure it's incredibly rare.

A friend of mine said the same thing when the meteor dropped on the farm I was playin, also had a fruit tree get stuck by lightning and start producing coal instead of fruit for a while.

I think the first meteor is scripted and set to happen? But it does have a chance of happening again in the future. I've had multiple meteors on my farm at the same time because I hadn't upgraded my pickaxe enough to mine them yet.
