I found them, gave them to Lewis, got the quest completed, but they are still in my inventory. I cannot throw them in my trash can, cannot throw them in tthe selling bin, cannot put them in a chest. Am I doomed to carry them forever, lol? Oh, I also cannot give them to Lewis again, topic won't come up

Put them in the Stardew Valley Fair (this also gives you an easter egg). And don't pick them up again (you lose anything that you don't retrieve from your stand before you leave the fair).

Is this in Multiplayer. If so, The reason they wont go away is likely due to the other player having the same quest but not yet completing it. My wife did the quest and was unable to get rid of them. She put them in a chest I grabbed them and turned in the same quest. Pants gone.

If not multiplayer, I have no recommendation other then go to any floor of the mines, Drop them on the floor, and leave. Mines reset as soon as you leave them so this would delete the shorts.

I had a similar problem in multiplayer with Robin's lost axe.
Robin's lost axe was duplicated for some reason, and I cannot get rid of the second one. Even if I try to give it to Robin, it just says that I'm giving it to the wrong person.

I was finally able to put them in a chest until the fair. Katalia, what easter egg? Lewis just yelled at me, gave me 750 tokens & told me to return them to him the next day. I tried to do that, but got the message, " wrong person" So they went back into the chest, since I cannot get rid of them

The easter egg would be that he yelled at you and asked you to return them. Obviously this was not an event intended to happen in the game and it's an easter egg because if you thought of doing this there was special dialogue. But the point of putting them in the fair is that instead of retrieving them you should have left them on your display and left the fair, and anything left on your display (the shorts) would've been deleted. Instead you picked them back up and are back to start. I guess you get to put up with Lewis yelling on you next year if you don't want to leave them in a chest forever.
