Co op
On the multiplayer page it said you can use your character from your own save and keep your tools and skills in multiplayer. I can't seem to figure out how to do it.
Has anyone figured this out?

You can simply choose not to join someone's 3rd year farm and start a new one.

The OP makes it sound like they want to take their character who is in year 5 of the game and join as a farmhand on someone else's farm. So yes, iridium-tier tools on the first day of Spring year 1 would ruin the progression.

If I misunderstood and the OP was asking for what you provided, ie: the ability to invite friends to join their farm which is already in year 5, for example, then I agree: this is less of a progression concern.

I also understand that my opinions and preferences are not everybody's. Which is why in my response I clarified that if they do allow you to join other farms as a farmhand with your existing late-game iridium-tier tools and whatnot, that there be an option for the host to disallow it for their own farm.

*shrug* We each have our own opinions on this. And because the OP was a little vague in their wording, you and I are discussing two very different situations right now.

I think it means, if you already had a solo farm, you can add other players to your farm? I don't think they mean you can transfer them to a new farm

I hope they don't put it in the game. Ever. Or at least give the host the option to turn it off. This could really break progression. :/

But back on-topic: There isn't an option for this, at least not right now.

There is an option to take pre-existing save files and have friends join.
It simply has a few requirements.

First Step: Make sure you have opted in to the Beta.

Second Step: Load a pre-existing save file (I recommend backing it up first, for safety) and open the Options section. Scroll to the near-bottom where you will find a drop-down bar with three options.

Those three options will be "Offline" , "Invite Friends-Only", "Invite Code".
Choose either of the invite options, depending on your purpose.
To gain the Invite code, it is on the same page just beneath the drop-down.

Third Step: Seek out "Robin" and purchase "Cabins" for your FarmHands.
Without a cabin to enter, players can not join. The current limit is 3 cabins, 4 players total.

Fourth Step: End the day / Save the file. Exit to Title, and choose "Co-op" to host.
You can skip this step and go straight to play if you send out your invite code, or friend invites.

Fifth Step: You're done. Now every time you play/host with this save file your friends/farmhands can join.

I hope this helps. Simply starting new is the "easier" process.

You were correct about your assessment. I honestly don't feel progression is a concern in this game because unlike harvest moon, I don't believe there is any penalty or override drive or goal for doing so. I was just confused because I thought on the multiplayer page it said you could carry over your character which I thought would be cool. I actually deleted all of my saves to start over in co op. I just thought you had the option to create a new character or use an old one. I thought that was why they had the host option to allow character creation and that little check box. I thought that was to provide the option to the host to prevent their friends from joining and ruining their game.

Anyway I have my answer, which is that it is not a feature at this time. So thank you!

im just looking for anyone to play witth me, stardew valley gets boring alone and i wanna try the new stuff with other people

I like the game but I don't want to start from scratch 10 different times which is why I was asking. I have a lot of people that want to play co op and I'm not playing the turnip harvesting, first floors of the dungeon portion of the game over an over. I get that starting over is a fun part of the game but thats when you do it on your own terms, not with every single person you play with. Terraria allowed you to take your character or had an option to force new characters and that worked fine even though that game had serious progression. Anyway for now, I'm just doing one long term multiplayer session with my bro and ignoring everyone else because its prohibitive against playing on multiple farms by the current design.
