How many flaming hoops to jump through before the game starts?
Honestly, this is beyond the point of ridiculous. It's becoming comically bad.

I have gone down the list in the "FIX YOUR GAME" thread, having reached the section on manually installing DirectX 9.0c. I am amazed that nothing "fixed" it yet. It's becoming apparent that I'm not fixing "my game", I'm fixing the game that was released in the state it is.

So what worked for you? Did you need to do anything at all? This is the first game in my entire Steam library that I've needed to do this before, and I am beside myself. Mind blowing.

Have you maybe considered that it's your system with the problem, not the game?

Mine was able to start instantly - No problem whatsoever.

If you can describe your problem though, Im sure people here may be able to better assist you in your problem.
defently on your pc end, mine has not had 1 problem

It opened and ran fine on my system. No errors, no additional installations. The problem is on a brand new laptop, two weeks old. I highly, highly doubt the issue is related to the system. The problem is the ancient code libraries and executables for the game to run.

I've manually installed DX9.0c, I've attempted to install the XNA 4.0 executable from the link given in that thread and it's throwing up a .dll error during the installation. I let it finish anyway, I've restarted the laptop and I'll see what happens.

Edit: As expected, no go. What amazes me is that it no longer did the "First time Setup" garbage, but actually remained "Running" in text next to the game in the left library tab within Steam. It's like it was open, but wasn't. It closed about 30 seconds after. This is amazing, never seen anything like it.

I don't know what the hell else to do. For a new laptop to jump through this many hoops to get a game to launch is incredible. My only guess is that .dll for whatever reason not wanting to install from that XNA installer. I have no idea how to force it to, or if I'm able to manually download the .dll, put it in the folder it belongs and hope for the best.

Thanks for the help and insight folks. You could have just said you had no idea.

Edit: Apparently you need to delete some obscure .dll in the Windows System folder for XNA to actually install properly. Found the information here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/413150/discussions/1/385428458169806482/

The "fix your game" thread should probably be updated.

Edit 2: XNA installed without error, restarted, still no go. Incredible. DX9C is installed, XNA is installed, what other ancient software does the game require? The only thing else I can imagine is installing every other damn version of DX.

Great community here.
You said so yourself that it's a new laptop. which means you are very likely missing a whole host of core system files and .dll's which many people take for granted. this is fairly standard for PC users. There is no point you getting uppity over. Especially when you're making no attempt to provide more information to help diagnose the problem. An error log would help substancially.
WhiteCrow May 18, 2018 @ 9:44pm
I don't have any error logs as it isn't even creating the folder in %AppData%. The error map files are empty. Believe me, it was one of the first things I looked for. This makes zero sense to me. I have done everything other than install every DirectX redistributable, and I'm debating whether I should save myself the disappointment.

Honestly, the game is notorious for not launching. Dozens of threads with pages of 10+ going back months, years. And you're first to blame a new laptop? LOL. It wasn't helpful at all.

You blamed the game for a problem with your system. Yeah, folks are going to respond rudely.

I blamed a game with a history of launching problems, yes. I think that's reasonable given it was attempting to launch on a new system. Occam's razor suggests the game. The bias here suggests the system. Simple.

No it isn't. We'll have to disagree there. It's been a consistent issue. If it were "stable", I wouldn't be finding countless threads on these forums as well as the reddit. It's a timeline of instability, but hey, you're kind of precluded from seeing that.

Edit: Hey, what do ya' know? A brand new thread with crashes: https://steamcommunity.com/app/413150/discussions/0/1692669912393994510/

Thread from 3 days ago on the reddit:
https://old.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/8js6hw/it_wont_launch/

But it's a stable game though.

you opened your post by saying the game we all love was bad and implying the game is broken when you just found out the problem was on your end

maybe try coming in with a friendlier attitude and you'll get one in return

glad the game works for you now though

Maybe drop the attitude and people would be inclined to do the same.

Same Problem here.
Stardew Valley doesn't start and I tried everything. The game starts with a white screen and closes after 4 seconds. No error logs. A few days ago the game worked perfectly and now I have this problem. It's so frustrating...
