During the first year lightning storms are almost entirely exclusive to Summer. Once your second year rolls around, they'll be much more frequent across all seasons (except winter, obviously)

I'm pretty sure it depends on season. Summer (and potentially Fall) should have some thunderstorms. I think I've seen one in Spring once, but it was long ago so I cannot confirm for sure. And never in Winter.

Also rain totems will only set the weather to rain, never storm, so I don't recommend using them.

LIGHTNING ....STORM....TOTEMS... please devs
As far as I know, you're much more likely to get suggestions seen by the developer by posting them in the Suggestions subforum of the Stardew Valley forums (not on the Steam Forums).

The more rods you have, the more batteries you'll collect during each storm. However they don't automatically hit. You'll need les storms if you have more rods.

... Up to a certain point. :P Unfortunately, if you're trying to get tons of batteries, there's a cap on lightning strikes per day - I think it's 15 or so. Very rarely, though, you can get 2 storms in a row, and lightning will begin striking while the other rods are still "working" from yesterday.

20 rods is plenty, typically.
