Penny and Haley

I've seen lots of dislike between Haley and Penny. Is there a reason for that? And no arguing.

Haley is focused on the superficial, the exterior. She's callous, tending to be disrespectiful of the player character (at least in her early interactions).

Penny is a co-dependent adult child of an alcholic, with crushingly low self-esteem.

Both those personality types tend to get under people's skin.

Do you mean between them as characters based on their dialogue, or via their reception from the fanbase? I know that Haley gets some downer opinions from people as a general response based off of first impressions (And some that wind up displeased that her personality changes as your heart value raises with her) While people that dislike Penny tend to be harsh on her for her supressed personality and halfhearted judgementalism paired with her being a teacher (Too real I suppose).

I haven't really paid enough attention to either of them to see if they have any dialogue about each other. I don't think that villagers outside of 'family ties' comment on each other.

I've gotten to 10 hearts with both Penny and Haley and they both really grow on you. Started off hating both of em, but give em a chance!

to be fair both of them become pretty likable once you max out hearts with them, especially Haley

Penny has tons of typos in her dialogue which bugs me

Haley is just as standoffish as Alex, Sebastian and Shane initially are, but people hate her more for some reason

Penny just feels to me like she was specifically designed to appeal to players with hero-complexes. She's just begging for someone to come and rescue her from her life rather than working to bring herself up. At least Shane, with a little push, actually works to improve his own situation himself.

It's more like marrying her out of guilt.

But that's how I see it, anyways.

I can see calling Abigail 'emo' (she isn't, but the confusion is at least understandable)... but Sam? Seriously? He is friends with Sebastian, but how on earth is he 'emo'? Do you even know what the term means?

On topic, I can't speak for others but I suspect Penny is disliked because she has low self-esteem -- that she needs to be 'rescued' and this puts people off. I understand it though it doesn't bother me personally. It's just one character and if you dislike her, you don't have to marry her.

As for Haley, I suspect people dislike her for the same reason I kind of do; she is very superficial, somewhat rude in her earlier interactions, and acts like a spoiled brat on a number of occasions. That's not to say she is a bad person or a bad character, she is just an abrasive character to some (and not others). I don't know if I would say she grows up, but that doesn't necessarily matter.

Personally, I don't really like Alex either; the self-absorbed jock stereotype is fairly annoying to me as well, though at least in his case he is not a brat and has reasons behind why he acts the way he does if you befriend him.

Other than that, I kind of dislike Clint given his self-deprecating attitude, but again, I don't hate any of the characters.

The fact that these characters have enough personality that we can discuss why we dislike or like them is a very good thing overall, in my opinion.
